JoJo and the Adinkroes is a children’s lifestyle brand. Our aim is to engage, inspire and empower through books and products that represent our colour and culture.
The Book
JoJo and the Adinkroes was birthed during the Global pandemic of 2020, when the world around us seemed so unstable and uncertain. Schools and businesses closed, which meant Barima like most, was forced to work from home. Teaching remotely, whilst trying to entertain an inquisitive, vibrant three year old. This, aswell as the murder of George Floyd and the series of events that ensued, fuelled Barima’s creativity and ultimately saved her sanity.
JoJo and the Adinkroes pays homage to Barima’s young, black, son Josiah (JoJo) and is an authentic story that evolved during this tumultuous time.
Barima’s hope is that she is able to equip young children with knowledge and understanding of the importance of their cultures so that they have a strong sense of self-worth and identity.
Through the use of Adinkra; symbols derived from the Akan culture in Ghana that convey traditional, positive messages and beliefs, she has created four modern day Superhereos. The characters, based on her son and his cousins all have great qualities and share positive affirmations that can help to spread love and heal the world.
JoJo loves having fun and playing with his friends in the park. One day, a strange thing happens which causes all of the schools and parks to close. JoJo is sad and wants to be happy again.
He finds a special toy that transports him to the Motherland, where he is reunited with his Grandad. He is given a bag of colourful jewels and a special message.
What did Grandad’s message mean? Can the Jewels really help JoJo to be happy again?
